Ashland Stables Named Jump Canada Owner of the Year: (from the Warm-Up-Ring)

John Fleischhacker of Ashland Stables in Wellington, FL, was recognized as the 2007 Jump Canada Owner of the Year.

In 2007, the horses of Ashland Stables made a significant contribution to Canadian show jumping sport. Paired with Ashland Stables’ Hickstead, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion sired by Hamlet, Eric Lamaze of Schomberg, ON, represented Canada at the 2007 Pan American Games where he won Team Silver and Individual Bronze Medals.

Their incredible success continued at the Spruce Meadows “Masters” Tournament in September where Lamaze and Hickstead produced the only double clear round to win the world’s richest grand prix, the 1 million CN International.

Lamaze and Hickstead were also members of Canada’s victorious Nations’ Cup Team in March in Wellington, FL, for the second consecutive year. Other impressive results in 2007 included winning 200,000 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, AB, the 50,000 Grand Prix at the CSI5 Athina Onassis International Tournament in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the 75,000 Keg Steakhouse & Bar Grand Prix at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, BC.

Lamaze also enjoyed success this season with other horses owned by Ashland Stables including Narcotique de Muze II, Lorrain Z, and Sadin.

In a special ceremony held prior to the start of the 100,000 CN World Cup Grand Prix, Jump Canada Chair Elizabeth Bordeaux presented a Waterford crystal bowl to Eric Lamaze, accepting

Michelle Wheeler Wins Running Fox CET Medal Final: (from the Warm-Up-Ring)

By Shannon Henderson

Michelle Wheeler of Calgary, AB, finished first in the Running Fox CET Medal Finals held Thursday, November 8, at the 2007 Royal Horse Show in Toronto.

The top 16 riders, qualified from four Regional Finals, were invited to contest the Running Fox CET Medal Final at the Royal Horse Show. The CET Medal Final is challenging because it consists of three phases: a flat/gymnastic phase, a jumping phase and additional testing, held over a two-day period, which challenges the riders’ equitation as well as their ability to control the horse over a jumper-type course.

Wheeler’s consistency over the first two phases, where she finished second in the flat/gymnastic phase held Wednesday and fourth in the jumping phase on Thursday, qualified her to compete among the top four finalists. At that stage, riders are tested over a shortened course and are judged based on their performance in the final phase only. This year, the final test included a counter-canter, which was to be held through the corner to a jump on the diagonal, and proved to be a challenge. Wheeler’s mount, Paddy Jordan, maintained the correct lead with impulsion and the pair appeared to be in sync the entire round, which helped to set them apart from the other competitors.

“Once I got in the ring, the class was very fun,” said Wheeler, 16. “In preparation for such an important class, I did a lot of flatwork. All the work has paid off.”

Wheeler and Paddy Jordan, a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding, are no strangers to competition, having competed at Spruce Meadows earlier this year. They also competed at the Royal Horse Show last year in the Jump Canada Medal and Junior Hunter divisions. Paddy Jordan is a 10-year-old bay gelding.

Wheeler will have her arms full as she travels back to Alberta. As the 2007 CET Medal Champion, she won a brand new Childric saddle donated by long-time CET Medal Final sponsor, Running Fox.

Tory Bova of Ashton, ON finished as Reserve Champion, followed by Miranda Travers Cavill of Claremont, ON in third. The fourth place award went to Samantha Aird of Delta, BC.
